PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Balloons blowing in the wind near Digital Domain Park are a reminder of jobs lost.
“We’ve had some people from the Digital Domain layoff come and apply here at Aegis,” said recruiter Kisha Christine.
The colorful decorations for Aegis' Saturday job fair also symbolize the possibility of a new beginning.
“I’m hoping to work here at Aegis doing customer service,” said Mariam Mengelson, 27.
The call center landed new business, so it’s looking to hire 300 people in the next three weeks. The company does not release its clients' names.
“We have a lot of positions to fill here at Aegis. Some are full-time permanent positions. Some are full-time seasonal positions,” said Christine.
Mengelson has her second interview Monday.
“I’ve been looking for work for at least six months, and I’ve been looking really hard,” said Mengelson. “The way the economy is right now, it is a big challenge.”
Azim Hussain accepted a job at Aegis today, working in the inbound call center.
The 21-year-old from Vero Beach will start in late October.
“A lot of people are out of work. The guys that were making a lot of money aren’t making money at all anymore,” said Hussain. “So it’s a big deal when a company does open themselves up to hire I think 300 people or so.”
In recent months companies like Digital Domain and Liberty Medical laid off hundreds in Port St. Lucie, but Aegis' workforce continues to grow.
The business process outsourcing company says it's hired about 900 employees locally since July. Christine says those employees commute from as far as Vero Beach, Okeechobee and North Palm Beach.
She says the customer service field has always been big, and it’s getting bigger. “More and more, you see some of these larger corporations outsourcing their business call centers, so it is a growing field."
It’s a field Mengelson hopes she can be a part of.
“So we’ll just see how it goes. I’m hoping for the best,” she said.
Christine says she’s hoping to hire 100 by Friday October 19 and the last 200 in the next two weeks.
