Greyhound bus window shattered near shooting activity in Port St. Lucie

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A window on a Greyhound bus was damaged early Sunday morning in the same area of the Florida’s Turnpike where there were reports of shooting activity, according to Port St. Lucie Police Department.

Port St. Lucie police received calls around 1:30 a.m. of shooting activity around the 5200 block of NW Corporate Way. When officers arrived, they found 36 spent shell casings, which are generally used in assault rifles, said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, spokesman for city police.

Sabol said they also recovered 22 spent shell casings from a 22 rifle and two live rounds from a 22 rifle.

Around the same time officers recovered the spent shell casings, Florida Highway Patrol was checking out a Greyhound bus on the Florida’s Turnpike where a window appeared to have been struck by an object. The bus incident was reported near mile marker 155, a few miles to the north of where the shell casings were found.

The bus was traveling north on its way from Miami to Houston when a passenger alerted the bus driver that something had hit the window, said Maureen Richmond, spokeswoman for Greyhound Bus Line.

She said the driver stopped the bus, turned the lights on and called police. Both the bus driver and police searched the inside of the bus looking for the object that had caused the window to shatter, but nothing was found.

One passenger, identified by police as a 26-year-old Minnesota woman, received a bump on her head, either from the breaking glass or from bumping her head while startled when the window shattered, Sabol said.

The woman was treated at the scene and released.

“This is very unusual and we consider it an isolated incident,” Richmond said.

It is unclear if the shooting activity and the damage to the bus window are connected, Sabol said.

The incidents are under investigation by both Port St. Lucie police and FHP.
