PORT ST. LUCIE — Four children were arrested over the weekend after a Port St. Lucie police investigation into a burglarized and vandalized home that sustained as much as $7,000 in damage, according to a police report released Monday.
Two 12-year-olds and two 13-year-olds were arrested following the Saturday incidents at a home in the 1800 block of Southwest Lisbon Street.
According to the report, police determined a 13-year-old boy picked up a landscaping rock and threw it through a window to enter the home. The boy went in and unlocked a rear slider door, which allowed the other three to enter.
The 13-year-old accused of tossing the rock through the window and both 12-year-olds then are accused of vandalizing the home's interior, causing $5,000 to $7,000 in damage. The other 13-year-old — a girl — went in the home and watched, but didn't vandalize anything.
As an officer approached the area, he saw several people — including one person on a bicycle — on Southwest Cadima Street. When they saw the officer, those that were walking ran between homes toward Southwest Lisbon Street while the bicyclist continued north on Southwest Cadima Street.
Police spoke with three juveniles on the back porch of a home on Southwest Lisbon Street near the vandalized home. One of the juveniles said she lived there. Police spoke to that girl's father, who said his daughter approached him about 5 p.m. and said she heard glass breaking. He didn't do anything at the time, but when he saw lights on inside the vacant home more than two hours later, he called police.
Investigators determined the vandalized home had holes in the walls, damaged appliances and broken glass.
After questioning, police linked the three juveniles encountered on the back porch to the incident. Investigators tracked down the 13-year-old boy accused of throwing the rock through the window at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds.
Three of the kids each were arrested on burglary and criminal mischief over $1,000 charges, while the girl accused of entering the home and watching the vandalism was arrested on a single burglary charge. All charges are felonies.
