PORT ST. LUCIE — Port St. Lucie Police arrested two men and found what appeared to be a small methamphetamine lab in a single story home on Northwest Friar Street, police said Tuesday.

About 9 p.m. Monday, officials at 911 got a call indicating a 6-year-old was in the home in the 100 block of Northwest Friar Street and that methamphetamine was being manufactured inside, police Sgt. Charlie Lumpkin said.

Officers arrested the boy's biological father, 33-year-old Earl Cummins, on a child neglect charge and arrested a second man on a possession of a controlled substance charge. The name of the second man was not immediately available.Early Tuesday morning, police searched the home, situated near Prima Vista and Bayshore boulevards, and found "numerous articles that were consistent with manufacturing of methamphetamine inside," Lumpkin said.

"At this point, my understanding is they had no methamphetamine, but there were items that were consistent with the manufacturing of methamphetamine," Lumpkin said, standing at the scene.

No one has been charged in connection with meth production, though the incident remains under investigation, Lumpkin said.

Officials with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration were called to assist because of the federal agency's expertise in processing, handling, identifying and disposing of suspected meth labs, Lumpkin said.

Several police and DEA vehicles remained at the scene shortly before 2 p.m., and a portion of Northwest Friar Street remained blocked.
