PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The search is on for an American man who went missing off the coast of Mexico after the boat in which he was sailing capsized Friday.
Joey Horrevoets was helping another man, Pablo Hildalgo, sail a boat to Ecuador.
The pair stopped off the coast near Rosarito, Mexico and tried to make it ashore on a dinghy. But a huge wave came out of nowhere.
It knocked both Hildalgo and Horrevoets into the Pacific Ocean.
"I, I couldn't believe it. You know, I felt bad about this trip in the first place," said Joey's father Joseph Horrevoets
Horrevoets, who lives in Port St. Lucie, said he is trying to do everything he can even though he is thousands of miles away.
Horrevoets said he was told by the American Consulate that Hildalgo was rescued by the Mexican Coast Guard. An official told Horrevoets his son has yet to be found.
"I'm hoping that he swam to shore or to another ship -- or that some miracle happened or that I get a phone call," said Horrevoets.
Horrevoets said he was advised by the American Consulate not to travel to Mexico to help with the search of his son.
