PORT ST. LUCIE — A 2-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital Thursday morning after apparently falling into a residential swimming pool, according to rescue and police officials.

St. Lucie County Fire District crews were called at 8:51 a.m. to an address in the 2000 block of Southeast Harlow Street, Fire District spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said.

The boy's mother fell asleep, then woke up and was looking for her son, according to Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, Port St. Lucie police spokesman.

She found him in the pool and brought him out, Sabol said. The mother started CPR procedures and the boy vomited, Sabol said.

The child was taken to a local hospital in critical but stable condition, Chaney said.

Sabol said only the boy and his mother were at home at the time and that police are investigating.

No other information was immediately available.
