PORT SAINT LUCIE, Fla. - Special operations units responded to the 8500 block of South Ocean Drive in Port St. Lucie Saturday morning for a leaking container.
According to Captain Mike Rizzello with the St. Lucie County Fire Department, the container was a 100-pound ammonia cylinder that washed ashore.
Rizello says when the crews went to plug the rusty container, it broke open, spilling the contents onto the shore.
The Department of Environmental Protection was called, and they are cleaning up the mess.
Beaches are open to the public.
No evacuations were necessary.
