Treasure Coast utility customers should beware of scam artists calling and informing them to pay overdue bills, Florida Power & Light Co. said Tuesday in a news release.
FPL issued the warning after reports in Miami-Dade and Broward counties of customers receiving such calls. Customers for power companies in other parts of the state also have reported the same types of calls.
The callers claim to be an utility employees and ask customers to put their payment on prepaid Money Pak cards to avoid losing service.
FPL doesn't accept Money Pak cards as payment for accounts, the company stated in the release.
Caller identification has also been used to confuse some customers. The scam artist call shows up as an FPL number from Miami, but company officials said the calls are actually from an online phone service outside the U.S.
The scam artists may be targeting customers of Hispanic descent, FPL said.
Anyone who receives a call of this nature should call 911 and directly contact their utility provider.
