FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Three teens were hospitalized after their car crashed in Fort Pierce Wednesday morning.
16-year-old Christian Enrique Medina, 15-year-old Peter Thomas Green and 15-year-old Timothy Aaron Green were heading east on Orange Avenue just after 7 a.m. when their car lost control and hit a tree, fence and a light pole.
Medina, who was driving, had to be cut free while one of his passengers was thrown from the car.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating initial reports that the car was racing someone else down Orange Avenue. "We don't know at this time. That's information we had heard. We are looking into that,” said Florida Highway Patrol Cpl. Mark Zook.
Zook said that the driver was most seriously hurt. He said the driver “coded,” meaning his heart stopped, though he was revived.
FHP initially said one person had died but later revised the report and said there were no fatalities.
Witness Gary Fuller said, "The driver slumped over in the driver seat. No pulse. Kid was in the grass. We were trying to help the kid who was in the driver seat hold his head up straight."
Medina was last listed in critical condition. Both passengers are listed in serious condition.
Fort Pierce resident Jeremiah Johnson's 14-year-old son, Noah, a freshman at Lincoln Park Academy, is a baseball teammate with the three students involved in the accident, he said.
Johnson has been in touch with the families through text messages, and they've told him one of the students was in surgery, he said.
Baseball Coach Matt Walters couldn't be reached for comment.
The Florida Highway Patrol says alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
