A popular shortcut in Fort Pierce may hit a roadblock.
Old Dixie Highway is commonly used by residents as a shortcut for those headed south on U.S. 1. But county transportation experts say the intersection is too dangerous for those turning left onto the roadway.
This issue has led to more than a dozen traffic accidents in the last six years, county officials say.
To offset anymore accidents, city leaders in Fort Pierce may approve a county proposal to construct a median on U.S. 1 so drivers can't turn left onto the roadway.
Drivers would instead be forced to skip the shortcut and take A1A to U.S. 1.
If approved, construction on the median would begin in July of 2014.
