FORT PIERCE — The pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run accident early Sunday in Fort Pierce is identified as Scott Colson, 54, a man who sold vegetables and fruit along the roadside in Lakewood Park on weekends.

The single man lived off Jenkins Road on Fort Pierce's west side. At 4 a.m. he went to Racetrack gas station store at Okeechobee and Jenkins roads.

Apparently he was on his way home, walking along Jenkins Road, when he was struck at 4:20 a.m. by an unidentified motorist. A passerby found him dead in the southbound lane in the 2300 block of Jenkins Road. Now police are trying to find the vehicle that hit him.

All that police know about the vehicle is that they suspect it was heavily damaged by the collision and would be obviously in need of repairs. Colson was 6-foot-1 and weighed 200 pounds, said his brother Bennie Colson of Vero Beach. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Sgt. Robert Curry at 772-468-1805 at extension 5215 or call Crime Stoppers at 800-273-8477. Callers may remain anonymous and be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.

At the time Colson was fatally struck, he was wearing a shirt and hat with Louisiana State University logos. His brother didn't know why Colson was out at the time he was hit.

Colon is survived by his bother and his father in Louisiana.
