FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Florida Highway Patrol says a pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross U.S. 1 from St. Lucie Boulevard in North Fort Pierce.

A woman in her 60s was hit by a vehicle just before 6:30 p.m., said Catherine Chaney, a spokeswoman for St. Lucie County  Fire Rescue.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Officials with FHP confirmed this was not a hit-and-run accident.
