FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Moments shortly after the St. Lucie County canvassing board read the results of an early ballot recount on Sunday, U.S. House District 18 congressional candidate Patrick Murphy declared himself the winner.
The unofficial results, which still need state certification, showed Murphy ahead of Allen West where Murphy finished with 50.16% of the votes.
When reached for comment, the West campaign was very tight-lipped about its next move.
Campaign manager Tim Edson said West was not available to speak, opting to send out an email statement:
"Since Election Day we have been working for a fair and accurate accounting of the election outcome in which voters can put their full trust. We will review the results of today's recount and the other available data to determune (sic) how to proceed. I have been humbled by the support we have received and the hard work of so many to ensure the integrity of this process.
We look forward to the report which will be issued by the Secretary of State's auditors this coming week which we hope will shed light on some of the outstanding issues."
Patrick Murphy spent time with reporters shortly after the recount at this campaign office in Palm Beach Gardens. Murphy did not want to respond to the comments by the West campaign, opting to talk about the future of his role in congress.
"Regardless of what my opponent wants to do, I'm moving forward. There's a lot to do right now, we don't need these distractions. This was a long, dirty, expensive campaign. The voters of the 18th District want to put this behind them," said Murphy.
Murphy and his campaign advisors said they were confident any efforts by West would fall short of changing the outcome of the election.
The results are still unofficial and need state certification.
Once the results are certified by the state, the West campaign could contest the results.
