INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies said they found more than $2,600 worth of stolen goods in a car that crashed Tuesday following a pursuit through a shopping plaza.
The driver of the car, Julie Pierre, 31, and her passenger, Lastacyia Williams, both of Fort Pierce, had made their way through several stores at the Indian River Mall , as well as Marshalls, picking up clothing and other merchandise without being noticed, the affidavits state.
The crime spree continued at Walgreens in the southeast corner of 58th Avenue and 20th Street, the Sheriff’s Office said. The women dropped a couple of bottles of vodka into their purses but were seen by employees, who called 911, deputies said.
Pierre, who hasn’t had a driver’s license in at least six years, hopped behind the wheel of a Nissan Sentra with Williams. Walgreens employees provided dispatchers with the license information. A deputy reported he found the Nissan driving through the Century Town Plaza in the southwest corner of 20th Street and 58th Avenue. Pierre recklessly sped away from the deputy when he activated his lights and siren, he said in the reports.
Pierre exited the plaza near Olive Garden and made an illegal left turn onto 20th Street, the Sheriff’s Office said. She attempted to make a right turn into Seacoast National Bank on the north side of 20th Street but lost control and crashed into a pedestrian-crossing sign, deputies said. Both women fled on foot but were immediately apprehended.
The stolen goods in the car included items from Macys, Charlotte Russe, Aeropostale and Victoria’s Secret, according to the affidavits.
Both women were charged with felony retail theft. Pierre, of the 400 block of North 18th Street, Fort Pierce, was charged with fleeing and eluding, driving while her license was suspended, and driving with an expired driver’s license.
Pierre remained at the Indian River County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $19,500 bail. Williams, of the 2800 block of Stoneway Lane, Fort Pierce, was being held in lieu of $2,500 bail.
