A Pennsylvania woman was in the St. Lucie County Jail Saturday on child neglect and drug charges after deputies say she left her 8-month-old child in the care of bar patrons she didn't know.
Sheriff's deputies report being called to a bar in the 6300 block of U.S. 1, Fort Pierce, about 7:42 p.m. Friday. They found Julie Marie Dengler, 31, in the parking lot with the soiled infant and no ride. A deputy changed the baby's diaper and left after learning Dengler's brother was en route to pick up her and the child.
Deputies were called back to the bar at 9:55 p.m. and found Dengler and the infant still inside. The manager said Dengler was making patrons uncomfortable by leaving the baby unattended while asking them for drinks.
Dengler, whose hometown was not listed on the arrest report, was charged with child neglect without great harm and disturbing the peace. Her bail is $12,375.
Deputies added charges of cocaine possession and possession of drug equipment after finding a rolled-up dollar bill in her purse with cocaine residue.
