FORT PIERCE, Fla. - A Fort Pierce man was stabbed to death on Friday after a fight that was started when he asked another man for a cigarette and was refused.
Gary Nembhard, 46, of 204 Dundas Court, was stabbed in the torso once and taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute where he died, according to Officer Dennis McWilliams, spokesman for the Fort Pierce Police Department.
McWilliams said that police responded to a call on the 300 block of North 16th Street regarding a stabbing. He said that witnesses told police that Nembhard asked a man for a cigarette and, when the man refused to give him the cigarette, Nembhard started chasing him and punching him in the head.
When the fight was over, Nembhard was found to have been stabbed.
Police have identified the person who stabbed Nembhard but have not released his identity. McWilliams said that police consulted with the State Attorney's Office and did not expect to release any additional details before Monday.
Detectives are investigating the incident .
