ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — A 50-year-old man accused of beating a 74-year-old man with a metal cane after a night of drinking was arrested Saturday on a felony charge, according to an affidavit obtained Monday.
Roy Mark Jacobs, of the 3200 block of Vernon Street in Fort Pierce, was arrested at 10:26 p.m. Saturday on an aggravated battery on a person 65 years of age or older charge in connection with the incidents.
An emergency room doctor told a St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office deputy that the 74-year-old man identified as the victim had injuries including a "bleed in his brain" and a broken nose and orbital bones.
The 74-year-old man told investigators that Jacobs and he went to a bar and had been drinking. Jacobs, he said, caused a scene and he had Jacobs drive him home. He said they got in an altercation and that Jacobs beat him with a metal cane. The victim also told a deputy he played "opossum" until Jacobs stopped the attack.
Investigators found a broken metal cane.
Meanwhile, Jacobs said the victim got angry and punched him in the head. He denied beating the victim, saying the victim falls down a lot.
A deputy said the victim's injuries did not result from a fall, but Jacobs said he didn't beat the victim.
