In an effort to get guns off the street, the Fort Pierce Police Department will host a “no questions asked” gun buyback on Aug. 24 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. It will be at these locations:
--St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church, 921 Orange Ave.
--Second Chance Church of God, 1225 North 25th St.
--Willie B. Ellis Police Substation, 1221 Avenue D
The Police Department, in partnership with the City Commission will pay cash for each gun turned in to one of these locations and no questions will be asked about the ownership or origin of the gun.
Amounts will be $50 for any gun and $100 for any assault rifle.
Armory specialists will be at each location to ensure safety during the day.
The gun buyback is in response to community members wanting to reduce gun violence in the area.
Since Jan. 1, police have responded to approximately 100 shooting incident calls; had more than 30 individuals shot; and five homicides.
