FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A 14-year-old boy was injured in a hit-and-run accident as he walked to a school bus stop in a residential area on South 13th Street around 6:25 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Sunrise was not until 6:59 a.m. Wednesday.

The boy is hospitalized at the Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute as police ask for public help in tracking down the motorist who drove off.

The car, a white Chevrolet Impala, was last seen going north on 13th Street from the accident site near Georgia Avenue. The vehicle is described as having dark tinted windows and chrome spinning wheel rims.

Anyone with information should call Police Officer Charles Davis at 467-6800 or call Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-8477.

Two years ago the Treasure Coast Trauma Center at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute teamed up with police to distribute 1,000 flashing lights to students, hoping to make them easier to see as they waited for school buses, walked, or rode their bikes to school.

Since 2005, there were about 11 accidents involving students being hit by vehicles, including two fatalities. Two adults — a crossing guard and a parent — were brushed by cars.
