FORT PIERCE, Fla. - UPDATE: Lanes reopened around 8 p.m.
Three semis and a van crashed on the Florida Turnpike overnight, shutting down multiple lanes of traffic near Fort Pierce.
The northbound lanes were reopened at 7:35 am. According to the Florida Highway Patrol website, one southbound lane has reopened but traffic is still backed up and alternate routes are suggested.
A tractor-trailer was traveling south in the right lane near mile marker 164 when it collided into the back of a van that was traveling in the right lane, according to the FHP.
The van ended in the right shoulder and came to a rest facing south.
The semi, driven by Chorazghiazad Mohammad, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., went onto the right shoulder, colliding through the guardrail and onto the right embankment.
As the trailer overturned, it came to a final rest and blocked the right lane.
Due to the crash, the trailer had no lights on. As other traffic approached the scene, two other tractor-trailers swerved to avoid the crash but both were unable to.
The driver of a second semi, James Hanna of Margate, Fla., swerved to the left as his trailer collided with Mohammed’s tractor-trailer, causing minor damage to the trailer.
The driver of the third tractor-trailer, Alan Greene of Kissimmee, Fla., tried to avoid the wreck, but the passenger side fuel tank was ruptured by the trailer of Mohammed’s vehicle.
Greene’s tractor-trailer then traveled into the median and collided with the median guardrail. Greene’s semi caught fire and became fully engulfed.
The driver of the van, Jean Pierre of Miami, was transported to Lawnwood Medical with minor injuries. No one else was hurt.
The roadway was shut down at the Okeechobee Rd exit 152 mile marker northbound and southbound at the Yeehaw Junction (SR 60) exit 193 mile marker.
