Fort Pierce police have arrested a man who they say made off with a number of auction items from a recent charity event.
Surveillance photos taken last Friday night outside the Sunrise Theater downtown show a man wearing fake dreadlocks and a hat leaving through the front doors more than once with items that police say were stolen.
The Theater Foundation was hosting a fundraising party and had a number of those auction items on display in the lobby.
Detectives say 54 year-old Robert Douglas Smith walked out with a mandolin signed by musician Bela Fleck, and Vince Gill concert tickets.
According to the police report, a boyfriend of a staff member recognized the man as Smith.
Theater employees say the incident put a bit of a damper on an otherwise great night. "We are trying to raise money for children in the area to get acquainted with the arts and culture and it was unfortunate someone took advantage of that," said Marketing Director Sue Hunt.
Smith was charged with grand theft.
The theater is hoping to recover the stolen items.
