FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Despite around the clock monitoring, one of five rescued baby pilot whales has died.
It was being treated, along with four others, at Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.
The whales became stuck offshore Saturday along with 17 other mature whales at Avalon State Park.
Sunday scientists were "guardedly optimistic" the baby pilot whales would survive.
Veterinarians have been treating the whales for what might be considered respiratory infections. and have been analyzing blood, fecal samples and even the sounds the whales are making.
It's not known when, where or even if the surviving whales will eventually be released. Several agencies will make those decisions within the next few months.
