FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Spam, cookies and a strawberry sundae valued at $5.37 could be considered a meager heist.
Still, being accused of absconding with the iconic canned meat product, which has 180 calories and 16 grams of fat per serving, and sweets was enough to land Jerry Avant, 54, in lock-up.
The reported Spam and dessert caper happened Dec. 31 in Fort Pierce at Three O's convenience store on North 25th Street, according to recently released arrest affidavits.
The owner of Three O's told Fort Pierce police that a "frequent and recognized customer" later identified as Avant swiped a $3.19 can of Spam, Uncle Al's Stage Planks cookies valued at 59 cents and a $1.59 DeConna Classic Strawberry Sundae.
The owner, who wasn't there at the time of the incident, said his brother confronted Avant outside.
Avant's brother, 43-year-old Gary Avant, then is accused of hitting the store owner's brother, who retrieved the Uncle Al's Stage Planks, DeConna Classic Strawberry Sundae and Spam, which is packaged with a pictured serving suggestion.
Some might eat Uncle Al's Stage Planks and a DeConna Classic Strawberry Sundae together, but Spam traditionally is not paired with cookies and/or ice cream.
Jerry Avant told police he took the items because he thought he had a store credit. Not so, the store owner told investigators.
Gary Avant said he "tried to separate" his brother from the store owner's brother.
Jerry Avant was arrested on a misdemeanor retail theft charge, while Gary Avant was jailed on a misdemeanor battery charge. Both have listed addresses in the 2500 block of Avenue G in Fort Pierce.
