Body found in Fort Pierce pond has yet to be identified

FORT PIERCE — Police still have no idea about the identity of the decomposing body of an apparently uninjured man, about 50 to 60 years old, found in a pond behind the Bent Creek clubhouse on Wednesday afternoon, a police spokesman said Thursday.

Investigators checked with neighbors and haven't found any cases of people missing in that subdivision along Hartmann Road, said spokesman Sgt. Dennis McWilliams. The gated community is north of the Orange Blossom Business Center and east of Jenkins Road.

The Medical Examiner's Office retrieved the body and initially couldn't find any signs of foul play. According to a police report, the body appears to be a male, about 50 to 60 years old, who had no identification on him. It appeared the body had been in the water for several days, based on the amount of decomposition.

An autopsy will be performed.

The body was first found by two out-of-town workers who maintain ponds. They told investigators they had just started work when they saw what appeared to be a body floating facedown at the edge of a water reservoir just south of the community's clubhouse, police reports show.

They called their employer, Lewis Graham, who confirmed the person wasn't breathing. Graham called 911 about 12:11 p.m.
