STUART, FL -- Speeding, it's the number-one reason motorists are pulled over along the Treasure Coast.
This is based on reports by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
According to state officials and our news partners at Scripps Treasure Coast newspapers, FHP issued 19,625 speeding tickets in three counties in 2008.
Tickets for drivers with no tag registration or expired registrations placed second in the number of citations with 9,623.
There were 9,343 seatbelt citations.
According to the reports, FHP is the agency most likely to pull motorists over, especially on Interstate 95 and Florida's Turnpike.
Court officials tell Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers that motorists' fines benefit everything from the state general fund to a state clerk's trust fund... Or it goes to the cities in which tickets were written.
