ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Five people suspected of entering the country illegally were apprehended Thursday during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 in northern St. Lucie County, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said.
Deputies about 10:30 a.m. stopped a sedan traveling south after Mascara said it was speeding in a construction zone.
The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge, while five passengers — suspected of entering the country illegally — also were apprehended.
The suspected immigrants were turned over to federal authorities, Mascara said.
