DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Need to book an off-duty police officer in Delray Beach? Call the library.
That's right. The Delray Beach public library won its bid to manage off-duty police officers when the previous provider stepped aside.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel ( http://sunsent.nl/sJvTlV ) reports the library system was looking for an additional revenue stream. And it was the only bidder for the service that manages officers who are booked to provide additional security or direct traffic at local festivals or events.
The newspaper reports the Delray department hasn't coordinated off-duty officer work since a racial discrimination lawsuit alleged some officers were favored over others.
According to Delray police, most departments provide the service in-house. The library will get about $3.20 per hour for each booking.
