DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Lester Parkinson's family of five has been in the middle of a foreclosure battle since 2009.
"I'm trying to save the home, doing our utmost to do that," Parkinson said.
But in less than a month, their home of seven years will be sold at auction. Refusing to give up, Parkinson is still looking for help and applying for the Independent Foreclosure Review .
“I understand that there could have been some errors or they have overlooked certain things when we bought the home and it appears as though there has been," Parkinson said.
Finding a mistake could lead to cash, as much as $125,000 from the U.S. Treasury program.
“They're reaching out to local non-profits like ours to increase awareness and do outreach to let people know this is legitimate, it is real, and you could qualify," Darish Still said.
Still runs CCMS , a non-profit HUD-approved counseling agency in Delray Beach.
His organization is co-sponsoring an event Saturday to help people apply.
“We will have counselors at this event available to review your loan information, determine if you preliminarily qualify, and get you started on the path,” Still said.
There is a list of eligibility requirements: you have to have been in the foreclosure process in 2009 or 2010... And have been with one of 27 lenders.
Participation in the review has been slow and so have payouts. So far, since the review started last November, no money has been awarded to homeowners. But no one's been denied money either. Despite no proof of a payout, the administrator of the review insists it's not a waste of time.
“You certainly want to have it looked at," Still said.
“It's very important that we go through this review, cause we don't know what the future holds," Parkinson said.
Saturday's free "More Help for Homeowners" event is at the Doubletree in Deerfield Beach this Saturday, December 8th starting at 9:30a.m. You can call 561-454-5700 for more information.
