DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - More than a million people now have concealed weapon permits in Florida.
It's the first state to reach that mark.
With so much talk of new gun laws, gun shop owners say more and more people are getting concealed weapon permits to protect themselves in any situation.
"I think everyone has a right to protect themselves," Scott London said. "The saying goes the only way to protect yourself form a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
London got his permit 10 years ago.
He's one of more than a million Floridians that have concealed weapons permits now.
"Quite frankly I'm surprised that it's not a lot more especially when you consider the interest in firearms lately," Delray Shooting Center owner Michael Caruso said.
The state passed the million mark around December 19th.
Since then, more than a thousand have gotten concealed weapons permits.
Caruso says it's going to keep rising.
The reason is because people are afraid of when they might need it and afraid of new legislation.
"Once people see that there is a threat against ownership they try to get their permit before they get shut out," Caruso said.
The fear is good for business now.
Concealed weapons classes have been full for the past month.
He worries politicians will pass something that hurts business.
"It's always an uncomfortable feeling to know that business is great today but can be horrible tomorrow," he said.
Gun owners like London aren't worried.
"I don't think it's going to happen obviously it could but i think there is going to be a lot of fight to it," London added.
The most popular guns sold at the Delray Shooting Center right now are assault rifles.
Caruso said he believes the reason is because many fear another assault weapons ban will be implemented again.
The previous one expired in 2004.
