SUBURBAN BOCA RATON, Fla. - Sgt. Adam Rosenthal, a highly-decorated and well-loved officer with the Delray Beach Police Department, died when his cruiser struck a tree Thursday morning in suburban Boca Raton.
The officer's cruiser appeared to be almost cut in half. It's unclear how the accident happened.
Rescue crews needed to extricate the officer, who was transported to Delray Medical Center.
The accident happened between Lyons Road and Boca Rio Road.
In his 16-year career Sgt. Rosenthal received in excess of 88 commendations and started a youth program teaching martial arts to youngsters.
"He had an amazing sense of humor, he touched many people here," said Sgt. Nicole Guerriero of the Delray Beach Police Department. "If you needed comfort, he could get it... he was just an amazing person...family man, friend, confidant."
Police say Sgt. Rosenthal was a 10-year-member of the SWAT team and an instructor who taught defensive tactics.
He leaves behind a wife and four children.
