SUBURBAN BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Sheriff's deputies are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in suburban Boynton Beach.
Around 6 a.m. the sheriff's office received a call of a suspicious person and vehicle in the Gables End Plaza at 4895 Windward Passage.
When a deputy arrived investigators say there was a confrontation between the deputy and the person in the vehicle.
That's when PBSO says the deputy shot and killed a 40 year old man identified late Thursday afternoon as David Scott Bennett of 145 Wooden Mill Terrace, Jupiter.
"He's got a past of violence and he's a multi-state felon, so whatever transpired back there led the deputy to do what he had to do," said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
The sheriff's office says Bennett had a history of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, robbery, vandalism, battery, and numerous other felonies and misdemeanors.
The owner of Curves in the plaza made a call to deputies when she noticed a suspicious car in the parking lot. She says it was parked in her spot the past two days.
The car the suspicious man was in was a stolen 2006 red four door Volkswagen. It had also been involved in a hit and run accident, according to the sheriff's office.
"We do know that we've had some problems in the larger area here within about a half mile radius.. .of burglaries to homes and businesses. So, we're thinking he may be involved with that. We do know that he is definitely a violent felon," the sheriff said.
The deputy involved in the shooting has not been identified as well and is currently on paid administrative leave.
