BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A police pursuit with a van ended in gunfire this morning near the border of Lantana and Boynton Beach.

The van was involved in a shooting at a parking lot near a Home Depot on Woolbright Road in Boynton Beach, according to police. In the store's parking lot a man was shot while he was sitting inside a car. He was identified late Wednesday afternoon as Lawrence William Modena, Jr., 41, of Deerfield Beach. According to police he was shot in the right side of the head and multiple times in the upper body.

Police say the suspected gunman, William Paul Dabbs, 54, of Delray Beach, then jumped in the van after the shooting and sped away at speeds up to 100 mph on I-95. Dabbs hit two other vehicles along the way.

He got off on Lantana Road and made it to Federal Highway and Hypoluxo Road where a Boynton Beach officer approached the van.

Police say Dabbs appeared to have a weapon near him and an officer fired into the van. The suspect was wounded but it is unclear if the injuries he sustained were from the officer or self inflicted. Dabbs was shot multiple times in the upper body and is in stable condition at Delray Medical Center.

Modena was also transported to Delray Medical Center and was later pronounced dead.

Dabbs faces numerous felony charges, including homicide, felony fleeing and eluding and aggravated assault on a police officer.

Police have not determined a motive for the parking lot shooting.
