A man accused of exchanging gunfire with several law enforcement agents last year has been sentenced to life in prison.
32-year-old Samir Herrera was a fugitive on a Miami-Dade warrant when he was spotted by U.S. Marshals in Boynton Beach in late August. When they approached him, they say he opened fire -- and they fired back.
At the time, stunned neighbors at an apartment complex off Congress Avenue and 23rd Avenue said they grabbed their children and ran for cover. Others were greeted by bullets passing through their homes.
The shootout ended when Herrera crashed his car into a fence at a nearby school and was taken into custody.
According to a Justice Department official, Herrera received the life term for the attempted murder of 3 U.S. Marshals.
