BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - Coming together in tragedy. The murder of two brothers has neighbors and classmates struggling to cope in Boynton Beach.
Police are combing through evidence to answer why a father would kill his sons and then himself.
Neighbors who knew the family say they never saw this coming. The argue it would only be worse if they ignore it.
Krista Malloch finds comfort knowing her neighbors want to talk about the tragedy.
"It's absolutely horrible and scary. This happened three or four houses down from us, so it's scary," says Malloch.
"I'm shocked, I never thought he could be capable of this. Maybe to himself, but not to the children," says Mina Lehyer, who lives nearby.
The pain prompted Lehyer to encourage the community to talk about it. She's gone door to door with fliers hoping a community discussion will evolve into support and education.
"Let them know how life is precious and that they can get a job if they need one, you know that there's hope," says Lehyer.
Marco Zavala, 11, and his brother Eduardo, 12, were strangled by their father Isidro Zavala early Saturday morning, before Isidro took his own life.
It all happened in the family home, where candles were placed outside to remember the brothers. While police investigate, neighbors are finding comfort that the community wants to talk about what happened.
"You want to be able to give back at least, or help her, it's such a tragedy," says Malloch.
Flags flew at half staff at Poinciana Elementary School and Don Estridge Middle School in Boca Raton in memory of the boys. The principals at each campus say grief counselors are on hand, and students are writing letters to the family to share their feelings.
Victoris Zavala, the boys mother, witness the killings but was not injured. She and Isidro were going through a divorce.
Police say the father may have left a note behind for the couple's 19 year old son. That note, which hasn't been released by police, may explain what led to this.
