BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A child is in critical but stable condition after nearly drowning in a backyard pool.
The incident happened in the one thousand block of Foster Mills Drive.
Investigators say the child's mother was watching television with the toddler and his three-year-old sibling when the younger child made it past a baby gate and into the kitchen.
A sliding glass door was open and the child got out and fell into the pool. It's not known how long the tot was in the water.
A neighbor heard the mother's screams and called 911 and a Boynton Beach police dispatcher instructed that neighbor to perform CPR on the child until fire rescue arrived.
There was no pool fence in place.
Police say this is the second near drowning in the city in less than a week. Last Thursday a 3-year-old boy fell into the community pool of the Meadows development.
He was playing on the steps with his sisters at the time. One pulled the boy out and a security guard performed CPR on the child, according to police. He is expected to be OK.
