A Boynton Beach mother was reunited Thursday with her 4-year-old daughter, nine months after the child was abducted by her father and taken to Veracruz, Mexico, according to Boynton Beach police.
Jazmin had been spending a weekend with her father, Feliz De La Cruz Lopez when he fled with the child to Mexico, police said.
Last month Lopez contacted the child’s mother, Irma Velasquez, via email saying that he could no longer afford to care for their daughter. He said he would return the child to her on one condition – that she contact police and have all charges against him dropped.
Velasquez has legal custody of Jazmin.
Working with Boynton Beach Det. Rayner De Los Rios, Velasquez signed a refusal-to-prosecute form and emailed it to Lopez. The form, however, has no legal value and there is still a warrant for Lopez’s arrest should he return to the United States.
Once Lopez received the form, he told Velasquez that he was in Veracruz, Mexico. Last week he emailed her again, telling her that he was in Cancun and that she should come to pick up Jazmin.
Velasquez boarded a plan to Cancun on Saturday and met Lopez and Jasmin at the airport.
Mother and child returned home on Thursday and Velasquez called Det. De Los Rios to tell him they were back.
"That was the best phone call,” said Det. De Los Rios. “This case really meant a lot to me, and now to know that they are back together, it’s the best possible outcome. ”
“She ran to me and said mommy, mommy, mommy,” Velasquez said Friday at the Boynton Beach Police Department. “I didn’t think about what could happen to me, I just wanted to see Jazmin. She doesn’t understand what happened but someday she’s going to know, ” Velasquez said. “
