BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - An elderly man who was known in the community to walk "for miles" was killed Monday afternoon when he was hit by a car.
Patrick Macklin, 72, of suburban Boynton Beach, was walking just before 1 p.m. on Woolbright Road, about a 1/4-mile east of Military Trail, when he was hit, a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office report stated.
A BMW, driven by Jeffrey H. Schwartz, 58, of Boynton Beach, was traveling west on Woolbright and Macklin was standing or walking along the edge of the road, the report stated.
Schwartz thought that Macklin was going into the roadway and turned his vehicle to the right, the report stated. The BMW left the road for the grass area when it hit Macklin, who died at the scene.
Michele Hansen, 50, of Boynton Beach, works as a receptionist at Bentin Chiropractic, about 100 feet from where the accident took place in the 3300 block of Woolbright Road.
She said a woman came to the scene who lives near Macklin in Pine Tree, off Military Trail. It is within walking distance to where the accident happened.
Hansen added that the woman said Palm Beach County Fire Rescue workers told her Macklin might have lived if someone had performed CPR on him before fire rescue arrived.
The woman told Hansen that he was well-known in the area, as he was always seen walking around.
