BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A 31-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night after he allegedly attacked a cab driver with a knife while trying to rob him, city police said.
Gregory Neider, of Lake Worth, is facing charges of attempted felony murder and attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, said Stephanie Slater, city police spokeswoman.
The driver, Marcellin Augustin, 56, remained in stable condition at Delray Medical Center late Wednesday, she said. The cuts to his head were deep enough to expose part of his skull, reports said.
The incident is one of at least three that has involved violent attacks on cab drivers in central Palm Beach County this year.
According to a probable-cause arrest affidavit, officers responded shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday to the 200 block of Northeast Sixth Avenue after receiving reports about a man bleeding profusely from his head. Upon arrival, officers found Augustin with a four-inch gash, the arrest report said.
Augustin was rushed to Delray Medical Center. At the hospital, he told police investigators he picked up a man at a residence in the 200 block of Northeast Seventh Avenue. He said he drove the man, later identified as Neider, to a Super 8 Motel on Hypoluxo Road, then back to Northeast Seventh Avenue.
According to the report, Neider told Augustin he only had an ATM Card and Augustin offered to drive him to an ATM to get cash to pay his fare. Neider then said he had a $50 bill and asked if Augustin had change.
At that point, police said, Neider grabbed Augustin by the head while seated in the back seat directly behind him and ordered Augustin to “give it up.” Before Augustin could retrieve money from his pocket, Neider allegedly began to slash the left side of Augustin’s head with the knife.
The cab started to roll forward and Neider jumped out and ran away, the report said. Investigators on Wednesday traced the telephone number used to call the cab to a residence in Boynton Beach. The woman who owns the phone and lives at the residence told police Neider used the phone to call the cab.
When he returned to her residence, he was covered in blood, said he had been robbed and asked if he could take a shower, the report said. Police found blood on both sides of the bathroom door.
The report did not specify a place of residence for Neider.
The attack of Augustin follows one in early May on cab driver Eliphete Simeon, who was shot and killed in West Palm Beach in what police described as a possible robbery. Later in May, cab driver Madsen Paul, 48, died after he was shot in the head during a robbery in suburban Lake Worth.
