BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- Dureno Saint Fort came home from work Monday night, crawled in bed with his girlfriend and 17-month-old daughter and watched TV. It was part of his regular routine: his time to unwind.
But police say the relaxation shattered when his 20-year-old stepdaughter rushed into the room and doused the Boynton Beach family with scalding hot cooking oil.
The attack left 30 percent of Saint Fort's body covered in severe burns, landing him in the hospital for a week. His girlfriend and daughter also suffered burns on their faces and bodies, but they were treated and released Monday.
Flore Saint Gerard, whom her stepfather said had been misbehaving in recent weeks, landed in jail on charges of aggravated battery and child abuse.
"Oh, God," Saint Fort said from his hospital bed at Delray Medical Center Tuesday, much of his upper body and head wrapped in bandages, "it's terrible."
The evening, Saint Fort said, began like any other.
According to a police report, Saint Fort had come home from work and found his stepdaughter, Saint Gerard, watching television in the living room. He greeted her on his way to his bedroom, where his 44-year-old live-in girlfriend — Saint Gerard's mother — held his 17-month-old daughter in bed, also watching television.
Saint Fort, 49, took a quick shower and joined his family in the bedroom a short time later. He climbed into bed and relaxed.
An aroma then floated into the bedroom from the kitchen. The family assumed Saint Fort had started cooking herself dinner.
"Nobody knew she was cooking oil," Saint Fort said.
The bedroom door then swung opened and Saint Gerard rushed into the room, toting a pot from the kitchen. Without any hesitation, Saint Fort said, she dumped boiling cooking oil on the stunned family.
The oil covered Saint Fort's face, chest and arms. It splattered on her mother's arm and the little girl's face and legs
"She then walked back to her own bedroom and shut the door," the report says.
Battling excruciating pain, Saint Ford grabbed the phone and called police, his face, arms and chest severely burned.
"Only my back is OK," Saint Fort said of his injuries.
Boynton Beach police arrived at the family's home just before 10:30 p.m. Inside, officers found the burned family, who could not immediately share their story.
Saint Fort was in too much pain to speak. The mother was paralyzed with worry over her 17-month-old daughter's condition.
Saint Gerard remained impassive, the report says, sitting "calmly on the couch in the living room."
She didn't say a word, police said.
In the bedroom, the report says, officers found "clear oil spilled on the carpet and covers."
Saint Gerard remained in the Palm Beach County Jail Tuesday in lieu of $9,000 bond.
From his hospital bed at Delray Medical Center, where doctors ordered him to say for a week to heal, Saint Fort said his family will try to work things out with Saint Gerard.
"She has problems," Saint Fort said.
