BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A rash of burglaries in one Boynton Beach neighborhood has the community on high alert. Arrests have been made in recent weeks, but the crimes in the Chapel Hill area continue. In fact, two happened Wednesday.
30-plus burglaries and attempted burglaries in the last few months has Chapel Hill residents taking matters into their own hands. Lee Morris is fed up with hearing how many of his neighbors have become victims.
"Every day we hear of a new one happening. We think about it constantly," said Morris.
One victim who didn't want to show his face on camera described what it was like to wake up to a burglar in his home.
"I was in a panic when I realized someone was in the house. Once I checked on my children, I got into a mode to defend my home," said the victim.
Someone had busted in through a locked garage door, and took off with several items, including a television. By the time the victim realized something was wrong, the burglar was gone.
"My kids wouldn't sleep here the night after, I've been up every night from midnight to 4 a.m.," he said.
Boynton Beach police have a task force made up of 15 officers dedicated to the case, but they don't have much to work off of.
"The best description we're getting is a shadow running out the door, startling people in the middle of the night," said Major Frank Briganti.
Early Thursday morning, Delray Beach police arrested Widley Laurent after an alleged attempted break-in. He was reportedly found hiding on someone's roof. Police don't think he's been working alone.
"We got one bad guy off the street last night, but there's plenty more out there," said Major Briganti.
Neighbors are taking heed, adding locks to door and calling police when they see something unusual. Our cameras were rolling as police investigated a suspicious vehicle Thursday afternoon in the Chapel Hill neighborhood. The vehicle was gone by the time police arrived, but officers hope residents will continue to call in anything out of the ordinary.
