Tri County Humane Society in Boca Raton rescues 50 dogs found cramped in U-Haul

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Humane societies in three states, including Florida, have stepped up to help rescue 128 dogs that were found living in filth in a U-Haul trailer in Tennessee two weeks ago.

More than 50 of those animals arrived in Florida on Wednesday night and are now being cared for at Tri County Humane Society in Boca Raton.

Fifty-two dogs were whisked out of the Fort Lauderdale airport after arriving on a FedEx jet from Memphis. The dogs were unloaded by FedEx workers just like they were air cargo. It was a journey that likely saved the animals' lives.

The animals were found to be living in filth without any food or water. Two women were arrested and charged with animal cruelty. The rescue will give the dogs a second chance at life.

"All different breads. We don't even know what we are getting until just now," said Tri County Humane Society volunteer Steve Posovky, who was among the teams of people loading the dogs into vehicles at the airport to drive them to Boca Raton. "You just wake up every morning with this dog looking at you and you saved a life," he said. Posovsky has been volunteering with animals for decades.

Upon arrival in Boca Raton, the dogs were immediately fed and checked by veterinarians.

"I hope and pray that they don't go through what they went through to get here," said Kim Spencer, another Tri County volunteer.

The Boca humane society was contacted by the American Humane Society about taking these dogs in.

Luckily, there was room for the dogs at the no-kill shelter. Other dogs were transported to shelters in Tennessee and the Carolinas. All of the dogs are expected to be up for adoption within a few days.
