BOCA RATON, Fla. - Thousands of students nationwide are demanding the right to carry concealed gun onto college campuses, with a permit. Now the fight is coming to Florida Atlantic University.
"Students for Concealed Carry" is starting a chapter at FAU.
"Almost every other state university in Florida has one, it's time for FAU to get involved and help," says Helen Pferdehirt, a co-founder of the organization.
Supporters argue gun bans on college campuses put students at risk.
"You're not allowed to defend yourself with the most efficient means necessary. That only applies to people who will obey laws in the first place," says Ryan Faerman, a former FAU student.
The organization claims six other state are considering legislation to allow professors or students to carry guns on campus. Most universities across the U.S. do not allow weapons. FAU policy "prohibits the use, storage and possession of weapons" on campus.
"We need to take the next step and go to Tallahassee and demand legislation to allow to carry on campus," says Pferdehirt.
The group is not yet an officials organization at FAU and already it's irking some students.
"You're giving students the freedom to carry a lethal weapon, that's not the wisest choice," says Alberto Jordat.
"I don't want to always think in the back of my mind, and wonder if a student across the room has a gun, that's a scary thought," says Elaine Jahnsen.
Pferdehirt argues it's a matter of self-defense.
"With the amount of rapes that happen on college campuses I feel more women might feel comfortable crossing campus at night if they were able to protect themselves," says Pferdehirt.
Attempts for an official comment from FAU officials were unsuccessful.
