UPDATE: Thanks to some WPTV viewers, more than $500 was given to the Tri-County Humane Society after a thief stole their donations box earlier this week.

"We have exceeded the amount that was stolen. People are coming from as far as Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Clewiston and Palm Beach... bringing money, food and supplies to Tri-County. They saw your segment on TV and wanted to help," said shelter director,  Jeannette Christos.

EARLIER STORY:

The Tri-County Animal Shelter in Boca Raton is beefing up security after someone stole its donation box.

The shelter thinks the theft happened sometime Sunday.

Tri-County has surveillance cameras but the facility was so crowded it was had to tell who did it.

The box had about $500 for dog and cat food.

"You're stealing food from animals, it's Christmas season, it's a time of giving. I don't know how these people can sleep at night," said Susan Richards with Tri-County Humane Society.

The shelter now has the donation box bolted to a desk.
