BOCA RATON, Fla. - Minutes before going to jail, Robert Lopicola shook his head and claimed his innocence.
"No, it's accusations it's not true," says the former WPTV Meteorologist.
According to court documents he engaged in sexual acts with two teenage boys. This is exactly the kind of crime the Kidsafe Foundation of Boca Raton wants to prevent .
"If you're not talking to your child someone else will," says Sally Berenzweig.
Berenzweig co-founded the non profit Kidsafe, she says communication is the first line of defense.
"A lot of parents don't know what they don't know and with education they do better," she said.
The statistics are staggering. According to the National Coalition for Missing and Exploited Children, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys, will be sexually exploited by the time they turn 18.
In the case of Lopicola, both victims he allegedly met on Craigslist were under the age of 18.
"They may have had homosexual tendencies and they're seeking it out online. No one is talking to them because most parents aren't comfortable talking about it," says Berenzweig.
Berenzwig spreads the word to students and parents around Palm Beach County. She says it's never to early to talk to your kids.
"We believe in starting at a young age. Have open communication with your kids about their bodies and their private parts, what is appropriate and inappropriate. We teach about safe and unsafe touch," says Berenzweig.
