John Arthur MacLean, South Florida's 'Superthief', arrested and charged with cold cases from 1970s

He's known as a "Superthief" and spent years evading capture for possibly dozens of sexual assaults.

But, John Arthur MacLean is behind bars in South Florida after his own DNA caught up to him.

Boca Raton Police announced Saturday that he was arrested after their cold case unit matched DNA taken from one of his victim's clothing.

He is facing two charges of sexual battery for attacks against teenagers that happened in the 1970s in Boca Raton.

When police arrested him Friday night at his home in Pompano Beach, they found him with surveillance equipment he used to keep track of police.

"One of the first things out of his mouth is, 'Aren't you ten-foxtrot-one?' That's my call-sign. We just changed to those call-signs three months ago. That was a surprise to me. I said, 'Aren't you Mr. MacLean?' He said, 'yes.' And I said, 'well, you're under arrest,'" says Sargeant Floyd Baker with the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

"John MacLean is intelligent in the classical sense. He covered his tracks very well. He could not foresee the advances in forensic science. He could not run from DNA," says Chief Dan Alexander with the Boca Raton Police Department.

While he was in jail many years ago, he wrote and published a book explaining how people can keep burglars out of their homes.

It was called Secrets of a Superthief.

Boca Police are reopening dozens of cases to see if he is responsible for any other sexual assaults.
