BOCA RATON, Fla. - Campus police at Florida Atlantic University are investigating an armed robbery that allegedly took place Wednesday night on campus.
According to an alert email sent out to students and staff, the crime started in the parking lot adjacent to the recreation center.
Police haven't specified if the victim is a student at FAU or what the alleged robbers were armed with.
Authorities said the victim was getting into his car when he was approached by five males.
Police said the victim was then forced to drive to a bank near the Boca Town Center mall to get cash.
The five men then told the victim to drive to Coconut Creek in Broward County, where the victim was "battered" and left alone with his car.
Police said he then drove home and received medical treatment for his injuries.
Students said the crime has them questioning how safe they are on campus.
"I question my safety and pay a lot of money to go to school, so I would expect to feel safer here, and I don't," said student Keyla Lopez.
This is the second armed robbery to be reported at FAU in the past week.
Last weekend, a student said she was robbed at knifepoint at the Arts and Letters building.
Students that NewsChannel 5 spoke with said they feel they're being targeted by criminals.
"We're so used to a certain freedom, maybe our guards are down. We don't have weapons. We're not thinking about these things. We're just going to the library and going to class," Dianne Phillips said.
Phillips worries these crimes could lead to others taking place at the university.
"It could turn to worse crimes like rape, or anything else, so this is really difficult. This is a difficult time," she says.
Thursday FAU said because this remains an active investigation, no further details are being released.
FAU University Spokesperson Lisa Metcalf said the school has reached out to the victim of Wednesday’s incident to offer assistance to him and his family.
In an emailed statement she also said: "The health, safety and welfare of everyone at FAU are of the utmost importance. FAU is committed to providing a safe learning environment for the entire University community. FAU has multiple security systems in place and has invested heavily in protecting the safety of its campuses. As a result of this incident, FAU is also increasing its police presence."
