BOCA RATON, Fla. - Barbara Knight says she was walking her friend's dog on Wednesday night along Garden Harbor Drive when two pit bulls came around the corner and began attacking the lab mix named Oliver.

"After they got him on the ground they started attacking his neck and they meant to kill. They were eating him and I was screaming at the top of my lungs for someone to help me," Knight says.

Knight says a construction crew working in a home nearby hit the dogs with wooden sticks so they would stop.

"If there was a child on the street or even a small dog, it would have been dead," Knight said.

Oliver's legs were ripped open and he has gashes on the side of his body. His owner took him to an emergency vet and he is expected to survive.

"Big chunks of his legs were bitten out. He's in a lot of pain," Oliver's owner Phillip Gurin said.

Gurin says he saw the dogs retreat to a house a few blocks away.

A man, only identifying himself as "Danny" answered the door at that house and says he does have two pit bulls, but they aren't violent.

"The dogs that attacked are not my dogs," Danny said.

Danny says one of his pit bulls is just a puppy and other other is too old to attack.

"My dog has hip dysplasia and my other dog is too young. Someone says they saw the dogs come into my yard. Pit bulls just get a bad rap," Danny said.

But Gurin and Knight are sure it was Danny's dogs.

"It is definitely them," Knight said.

Oliver's vet bills so far are about $1500.00.

Gurin says police won't get involved, so he is taking matters into his own hands.

"Right now I'm going to do all I can to get these dogs out of the neighborhood because I don't think this is a one time thing. I think these dogs have the potential to do this again," Gurin said.

Danny says his landlord wants him to move because he has pit bulls. But he says he has not officially been evicted.
