DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - Southbound lanes of Interstate 95 were closed from Southwest 10th Street to Sample Road for more than three hours Thursday morning after a crash and car fire left one person dead and a second person injured.

Four vehicles were involved in the accident that was reported shortly before 6 a.m.: a tractor trailer, an Oldsmobile Aurora, a Ford F-150 and a Mercury GrandMarquis.

Victor R. Espinosa Crespo, 45, was driving the tractor trailer northbound on I-95, when his wheels came off, bounced over the wall and landed in the southbound lanes where the three other cars were located, according to FHP.

Stefanie Sue Coutley, 18, the driver of the Oldsmobile, struck the bouncing wheel and received minor injuries.

Carl L. Mckever, 56, then slammed his F-150 into the back of the Mercury GrandMarquis, causing the car to burst into flames. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Mckever did not receive any injuries.

The identity of the dead driver is currently unknown and is still under investigation, according to FHP.

How Crespo’s wheels came loose and the overall cause of the accident remain under investigation.

Southbound traffic during the Thursday morning commute on I-95 was backed up into south Palm Beach County. All lanes were later opened at 9:45 a.m.
