OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - A small plane crashed around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday night at the Okeechobee Municipal Airport.

According to investigators, the rear landing gear failed while the plane was landing to refuel.

The pilot was able to make a safe landing despite the failed mechanism.

Rescue crews were on scene to aid the student pilot from Denmark and his instructor. They were the only people on board the plane during the accident.

The pair was flying a Cessna 172 from North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines. As the plane was landing, the rear landing gear collapsed as the tires hit the runway. Both men refused medical treatment

The FAA will investigate.
