Okeechobee County Sheriff Paul C. May has laid off 38 employees, he announced on the department's Facebook page.
Sheriff May said the cuts were due to a $2 million reduction in his budget.
According to the sheriff, his budget is $14,824,611 and he asked for 15.3 million dollars for the next year.
But he says the Okeechobee County Commissioners said he needed to reduce the budget by $2.5 million.
“Now that we have done these layoffs, we will have had to go to what I consider to be an unsafe number in the jail, on the road and at the courthouse,” sheriff May said in the Facebook post.
The sheriff plans to appeal the budget to the governor and cabinet in Tallahassee.
